Woman in fatal crash at gas station gets probation

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- A woman charged in a fiery, fatal crash at a gas station has been sentenced to five years of probation.

Kelli Renae McKay pleaded guilty Wednesday to careless driving in an accident at a Colorado Springs gas station in which 18-year-old Whitney Hendrickson died in March.

McKay crashed her pickup into another vehicle at the gas pumps. Hendrickson was filling a minivan and was trapped between a toppled gas pump and her vehicle, which erupted in flames.

The judge said he was respecting the wishes of Hendrickson's family by not sending McKay to jail. Her sentence includes 200 hours of community service and she cannot drive for four years.

Hendrickson, a student at Grinnell College in Iowa, was home on spring break.
