SE Iowa deputy found guilty in assault case

BURLINGTON, Iowa (KWWL) -- A Des Moines County sheriff's deputy accused of assaulting a student at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington has been convicted of a lesser charge.

Eric Staub had faced a serious misdemeanor count of assault causing bodily injury in the assault on 25-year-old Darren Taeger last summer. Under a plea agreement, prosecutors lessened the charge to simple assault and a judge issued a guilty ruling earlier this week.

Prosecutors argued the incident started when 27-year-old Staub got a call last August from his girlfriend, also a student at the college, claiming she was having a problem with Taeger.

Sheriff Mike Johnstone says Staub is undergoing more training and working under supervision.

Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 6. Staub faces up to 30 days in jail.
