UI announces new International program

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- The University of Iowa announced Wednesday its involvement in a new overseas scholarship program. One university official will make the official announcement in Washington D.C. this weekend.

Scott King, director of the Office of International Students, will head to D.C. this weekend with 21 other officials from schools around the country.

King was invited by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki to announce the beginning of the Iraq Education Initiative that will send 50,000 students to the United States and other English speaking countries in the next five years.

King says the program can help take the next step in democratizing Iraq.

"I feel its a very smart program," said King.  "It has an opportunity to really change not just Iraq but possibly influence the whole part of the world."

The University of Iowa hopes to welcome 40 Iraqi students in January of 2010
