Customers protesting water rate increase

BOUTON (KWWL) -- Customers of a central Iowa water district are protesting plans for a hefty rate increase blaming money mismanagement.

At a public hearing in Bouton Monday, customers critized the board of the Xenia Rural Water District for not keeping in check expansion plans that plunged the district into debt.

Xenia has 9,300 members in 11 counties.

The company says they have no choice but to up the rates by 63 percent. They're currently 141-million dollars in debt.
