Minimum wage increase makes business owners nervous

Posted:

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- An increase in the federal minimum wage later this week is welcome news to some workers, but has some business owners concerned about their bottom line.

The federal minimum wage goes up Friday ten-point-seven percent to $7.25 an hour, bringing a full-time employee's minimum wage salary up $112 a month. This catches the rest of the country up with Iowa, already paying $7.25 for minimum wage.

Food service jobs account for the largest category of minimum wage workers and restaurant owners say the timing is difficult because they're already dealing with a decline in business, increases in food costs and rising gas prices.
