Veterans hospital adds comfort to cancer treatment

IOWA CITY (AP)--The generally unpleasant surroundings in which cancer patients received treatment at the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Hospital have been discarded.

The hospital's new Chemotherapy and Infusion wing offers improvements for both patients and staff working there.

Registered nurse Ann Clark said conditions were small and cramped, allowing for six chairs and one bed. She called it a rectangle with a glass partition. Aside from the four television sets, the only view was of the nurses.

The improved chemotherapy wing has five bays, each with two recliners for receiving treatment. Each bay has two flat screen televisions, so patients can watch whatever they want.

Chemotherapy wing project engineer Michele Millers says the changes were born out of an increased demand for the treatments as well as a requirement to upgrade the pharmacy.
