Freak accident following church service

PRARIE DU CHIEN (KWWL)--A freak accident, at the end of an outdoor church service, sent two people to the hospital in Prairie Du Chien Sunday. Parishoners say it's a blessing more people weren't injured.

St. Peter's first-ever outdoor church service had just ended, and more than a hundred people were still in Lawler Park. An elderly parishoner inadvertantly put her car into drive, and it rolled down hill, into the crowded area.

Alert parishoners jumped out of the way, as the car struck some picnic tables and damaged a gazebo. The car then slammed into the metal retaining wall at the Mississippi River. The car nearly went into the river, but bounced off the wall.

Bernard Boylund was injured, and the driver, Mae Hjelle was shaken up by the experience.  Both appeared to have non-life threatening injuries.
