Winings and Bermel win Waterloo Open

WATERLOO- 22-year old Indiana native Andy Winings won the professional half of the 2009 Waterloo Open by one stroke over Matt Maskel and Steve Runge.  UNI golfer Kyle Bermel won the amateur side with a 3 day total of 9-under par.

Garrett Jones had a chance to force a playoff on the 18th green but missed a birdie putt that would have put him at -14.  Winings has one semester left at the University of Kentucky and said that the $45,000 prize will help continue his dream of playing pro golf and hopefully one day making it on the PGA Tour.

Bermel's stiffest competition come from Iowa State's Nathan Leary, a graduate of Waterloo West high school.  Leary was within two strokes through nine holes but Bermel pulled away on the back nine to win by five.  Leary tied for 2nd place at 4-under.
