Sans Souci residents prepare for future demolitions

WATERLOO (KWWL) Waterloo is set to receive a Federal Hazard Mitigation grant to demolition 74 flood damaged homes.

The properties eligible to be bought out and torn down are located in the Sans Souci, Riverside and Sherwood Park neighborhoods.

FEMA is providing $4.2 million to acquire and demolition the properties.

Saturday morning, Vicki Weikert helped her mom grab a few more items from her house in Sans Souci.

Now completely gutted, Weikert said this was her parents' dream house. They lived in Sans Souci for 39 years.

Weikert said homeowners in Sans Souci made a group decision to go on the buyout list. All 20 homes should be torn down.

"It's really hard for some of the other neighbors. They invested everything here and they have an expense to pay off on their house and the expense of another house and it's been difficult," said Vicki Weikert.

Weikert said even though no one has lived in her parents' house in more than a year, it will be hard to lose the house again.

She isn't sure what will happen to the Sans Souci area when the houses are gone. But she said there's a chance it will be turned in a wildlife park area.
