Wolfhounds suspected in more Illinois attacks

EAST ALTON, Ill. (AP) -- Police say two Russian wolfhounds that attacked at least four animals last year in southwestern Illinois have struck again, this time injuring a man and two dogs.

Investigators in East Alton say 46-year-old Kevin Bartles suffered 13 puncture wounds on his arms while trying to defend his small mixed-breed dog from the attack Thursday. Minutes later, police say a woman reported that the dogs severely injured her small dog in their house.

Authorities believe the wolfhounds escaped from their back yard.

They're now in the custody of Madison County animal-control officers.

The same dogs are believed to have killed three dogs and mauled a fourth during a two-month span last year. Because there had been no more attacks until this week, police assumed the dogs were gone.
