Waterloo Open Pro-Am tournament kicks off the weekend

WATERLOO (KWWL) - Thursday pros got their chance at the 46th Annual Waterloo Open. Hundreds tee'd off at Irv Warren Golf Course where, this weekend, 192 pro golfers will take the course. It's an event that draw people from all over Eastern Iowa.

Thursday afternoon dozens of golfers took the course for the Waterloo Open Pro-am.

"They love to come out and play and get a chance to mingle with the pros. And the pros, it gives them time to talk to local folks and really engage in all that Waterloo is about," said Aaron Buzza, co-chair of the Waterloo Open.

Jack Busenbery with Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare loves the opportunity to play with a pro.

"I get to play with Zegler, a past PGA winner on the tour, what a great afternoon," said Busenbery.

But for most the pros, Thursday was a chance to play the course. A course the looks different then it did last year.

"Missing some trees, esspecially on 18. Things look a little bit different. You could definitely tell that the grounds crew did a good job picking up stuff and you can see a lot of stumps out there," said Jamie Frasier, a pro from Kentucky.

Last week's storms knocked down nearly one hundred trees leaving behind a major clean-up. But as Saturday approaches pros, amateurs and organizers alike say they are proud to be a part of one of the largest golf tournaments in Eastern Iowa.

And no matter how well they do, many of the pros here say this is the biggest crowd they'll see all year and they're looking forward to a big turn out this weekend; that's thanks to nice weather.
