Americans spending less on school supplies

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Back-to-school shopping is just around the corner, and Americans expect to spend less this year -- due to the slumping economy.

A survey from the national retail federation found families with kids in kindergarten through grade twelve will curb spending by 7.7 percent.

The overwhelming number of those surveyed said discount retailers will be their top back-to-school shopping destination.

And 44 percent said they'll get an early jump on shopping, hoping to take advantage of early promotions, and spread their spending out over a few weeks.
