Pet boa constrictor on the lam; owner faces charges

QUINCY, Ill. (AP) -- Police in Quincy say a man is accused of violating two city ordinances in connection with the escape of his 8-foot boa constrictor, which is still on the loose.

Fifty-four-year-old Dan McLaughlin is charged with possessing a restricted animal without a permit and with failing to report the escape of a restricted animal.

The snake has been on the loose for about two weeks.

Quincy residents must have permits for any constrictor snake longer than 6 feet and must notify authorities if such snakes escape.

Authorities urged people to call 911 if they spot the snake and cautioned them not to approach it.

Local snake dealer Gary Liesen says the snake might eat a raccoon, a possum or a feral cat, but not a human.
