Fate of St. Mary's

DUBUQUE (KWWL) - Hundreds of parishioners from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dubuque met Wednesday night to discuss the fate of their church.

The 150 year old church needs around $40,000 a year to operate, but only brings in half of that. The Parish Council has tentatively agreed with the plan to close, though no final decision has been made.

Life long parishioners spoke to a crowd about the tough decision to close the parish. They called St. Mary's an aged parish and said there isn't enough involvement, young families or money to keep its doors open.

Father Rizonki asked everyone to keep an open mind about the issue, agreeing that no matter what it will be a difficult process.

No specifics regarding the use of the building or the parish have been released. The fate of St. Mary's is now up to the Archdiocese of Dubuque.
