Special Olympics Play Day offers more than games

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Special Olympics is a great opportunity for children with disabilities, but you must be at least eight years old to participate.

That's why variety sponsored a Special Olympics Play Day Wednesday in Waterloo.  The seventh annual event at Castle Hill Elementary was a chance for kids ages two through eight to get active and socialize.  Activities included dart tossing, basketball, soccer, long jump, and a 25 foot dash, just to name a few.

"The kids get to do a variety of activities they just really have a fun time. We try to encourage them to cheer on the other kids so you might hear a lot of go, go, go, and they really love the bowling. That's their favorite thing is the bowling," said teacher and volunteer Regina Barth-Wroten.

After the fun, everyone enjoyed a lunch, received awards for completing all ten play stations, and even had their pictures taken.
