Coach Thomas' son accepts A-P Athletic Director job

PARKERSBURG (KWWL) -- Aaron Thomas, son of legendary head football coach Ed Thomas, has accepted the position of Athletic Director at Aplington-Parkersburg High School.

Aaron told KWWL he's excited about the new challenge and he's excited about living closer to his mother.

Thirty-year-old Thomas is leaving Union High in La Porte City, where he served as the athletic director and boys basketball coach.

Thomas says it was a tough decision to leave Union but that Aplington-Parkersburg has always been a special place to his family.

Former assistants Al Kerns and John Wiegmann will serve as co-head coaches next season. Aaron Thomas says he won't coach football.

Aaron's father and long-time coach Ed Thomas was shot in the temporary A-P weight room on June 24.

    The University of Northern Iowa is represented by seven members on the 2017 Missouri Valley Football Conference's preseason squad as announced by the league office on Monday. Senior defensive back Malcolm Washington (Houston, Texas) and senior linebacker Jared Farley (Cedar Falls, Iowa) were each named to the first team heading into the 2017 season.

    Tom Jenk Jr. gave the Beckman baseball team a bit of a boost. The longtime Blazers' coach, who hasn't been in the dugout this season due to a battle with a brain tumor, paid a visit to his team the day before Beckman topped Denver 7-1 to open the class 2A state baseball tournament.
