9-year-old girl among those killed in Amtrak crash

OTTAWA, Ill. (AP) -- A 9-year-old Indiana girl was among those killed when an Amtrak train struck a vehicle in north-central Illinois.

LaSalle County Coroner Jodeen Bernard said Tuesday that Elizabeth Rasmusen was pronounced dead on the scene of Monday's accident, along with 82-year-old Benjamin Rasmusen and 81-year-old Marilyn Rasmusen, both of Leland, Ill.

Two other Indiana children, ages 10 and 7, were injured in the crash.

It was not immediately clear how the victims were related.

Authorities say initial evidence suggests the car the five were riding in didn't stop at the railroad intersection and was hit by the California-bound train.

Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari says there were no injuries to passengers or staff aboard the train.

The accident is under investigation.
