UPDATE: Person of interest in Waterloo shooting identified

WATERLOO (KWWL) - A person of interest in connection to a weekend Waterloo shooting has turned himself in at Allen Hospital Monday afternoon.

Around 2:00  p.m.  Monday Waterloo Police Department investigators were told that a person of interest wanted in connection with this incident was going to Allen Hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound.

Investigators met with 21-year-old Darnell Garrette Demery of Waterloo and placed him under arrest for a no bond parole violation.  Demery was admitted to the hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening wound to his right arm.

The officer involved in this incident, 21-year-old Spencer Gann, with nearly one year of service with the department, has been reassigned to administrative duty per department policy.  Officer Gann was not injured during this incident.

Waterloo Police Capt. John Beckman said that investigators found blood at the scene.

Around 11:30 p.m. Saturday night police were called to a hit and run accident at Mitchell and La Porte Roads in Waterloo.

Police later tracked down the 2001 Dodge Stratus they say the suspect was driving in the parking lot of the Olive Garden restaurant at San Marnan Drive and Schukei Road.

That's when they say the suspect ran from police into a nearby wooded area and fired shots at the officer.

The officer returned fire.

A resulting search for the suspect lasted through the night and into Sunday morning.
