Gizzard shad found in Lake Wapello

DRAKESVILLE, Iowa (AP) -- Environmental officials are investigating how an unwanted fish species has returned to a southeast Iowa lake that recently underwent a $400,000 improvement project.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources officials say gizzard shad were found last week at Lake Wapello during routine sampling of the fishery.

The improvement project at the 270-acre lake was completed in April. Officials had drained the lake and nearby ponds in an effort to eliminate unwanted fish species including gizzard shad.

Officials say it is against the law to introduce live fish to any public waters in the state and they'll investigate how the gizzard shad were reintroduced to the fishery.
