Greening Dubuque's Alleys

DUBUQUE (KWWL) - The City of Dubuque is replacing two downtown alleys.

It's a part of the city's Green Alley Pilot Project. Crews will replace the pavement on two alleys between Jackson and White Streets and repave them one with conrete brick and one with porous asphalt.

The project will test ways to prevent alley flooding and divert water from the city's stormwater management system.

"Most of that water would be infultrated into the pavement and go into an underground storage area," said Jon Dienst, civil engineer.

Civil engineers say they chose these two alleys because of their native sand soil, which allows water to sink faster. Should the pilot be successful the city will explore using paving systems on other alleys.
