Illinois scientists to monitor soybean disease

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Scientists with the Illinois State Water Survey say they're studying how the travel of soybean rust disease spores can predict future infestations across the state.

Researchers with the Springfield-based agency say they'll use a network of precipitation monitoring sites to find out where spores are showing up.

It's part of a bigger effort. According to the agency, from this May through October about 80 sites across the Midwest and South will monitor the spores.

Any samples will be sent to the U.S. Department of Agriculture for testing.

Soybean rust disease can cause crops to lose more than 50 percent of their yields. The state has monitored spores since 2005.
