Nurse Aide Olympics in Waterloo

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- It's not an Olympic year, but don't tell that to people in Waterloo.  The third annual "Nurse Aide Olympics were held Wednesday at Hawkeye Community College.

It's held every year to honor local certified nursing aides.  12 teams from across the area competed throughout the day doing everything from a wheelchair push, to balloon shaving, blind-fold feeding, and even a bedpan toss.

The event was held in memory of Gladys Peterson, a part-time nurse aide instructor at Hawkeye who passed away in March.

"I think they really enjoy the fact that they get a chance to get away like you say do some of the things they normally do but not with the stress that goes along with it," said Allied Health assistant program manager Victor Palmer.

A trophy was awarded to the team with the most points.
