City delays mailing protest letter to FBI

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - The Iowa City City Council decided to hold off for now on registering a protest with the FBI for the agency's infiltration of a local anti-war group.

The City Council's became concerned about the issue following a published report that the Federal Bureau of Investigation sent an agent undercover to keep tabs on about 25 activists who participated in protests at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn., in September 2008.

While council member Mike Wright late Monday advocated sending the letter, others said they preferred to at least wait for the results of a Freedom of Information Act request into the infiltrations before sending a protest letter.

Mayor Regenia Bailey and other council members added they didn't want to use city resources to look into any legal ramifications of the FBI's actions.
