Long-time Waterloo councilman will not seek re-election

WATERLOO (KWWL) - Waterloo's Third Ward Council Member Harold Getty announced Tuesday he would not seek re-election to a another term for the office of city council in the November 2009 city election. Getty said, "It has been a privilege to serve the citizens of Waterloo these past years. There are no better citizens than the ones who live in Waterloo. We all want the best for this city and together we have seen many positive changes over the years. Although I no longer will be a member of the city council, I will be available to serve our community as we continue to prosper and grow."

Getty was first elected to the city council in 1974, served under then mayor Leo Rooff for ten years and Del Bowers for two years. Getty was re-elected to the city council in 1994 along with former mayor John Rooff and served through 2003. Getty was re-elected to a four-year term in 2005 along with current mayor Tim Hurley. Getty has been a member of the city council for 26 years out of the past 36 years.
