Harkin Announces Clarke Grants


Clarke College in Dubuque is about to receive nealry $ 800,000 in Federal Grants from the United States Department of Education. Iowa Senator Tom Harkin made the announcement in a press release July 1. 

Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that Clarke College in Dubuque and Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa will receive a total of $799,421 in grants from the U.S. Department of Education. Harkin is the Chairman of the Appropriations subcommittee that funds education initiatives.

"Providing Iowa colleges and community colleges with the resources to upgrade technology boosts learning opportunities and provides an investment in our future," said Harkin. "It is one of the most important things we can do to keep Iowa schools - and the students they education - competitive."

These funds were provided through the Strengthening Institutions Program within the Department of Education. They will be used to enable the colleges to improve their academic quality, institutional management, and fiscal stability and increase self-sufficiency.

Details of the grants are below.

  • $400,000 for Indian Hills Community College to upgrade technology to strengthen academic programs and institutional management
  • $399,421 for Clarke College to create a technology-rich teaching and learning environment that will enable faculty to use existing and emerging instructional software and technology to develop discipline-specific materials that engages students of all backgrounds in acquiring the knowledge, skills and dispositions for living and working in a global knowledge-based economy.
