5K firefighters race to raise money

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) - More than a thousand runners overtook Twelfth Street in Cedar Falls for the Sturgis Falls 5K.

The race grew almost a third of the size since last year. Among the runners were about 12 firefighters from Cedar Falls and Waterloo.

Several ran in their full gear. Cedar Falls Firefighter Shane Farmer organized the group after running last year.

Farmer wanted to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis research because of friends' children with the disease.

He felt that the gear almost mimics a life threatening lung disease called Cystic Fibrosis.

We can relate to them because we have to stay fit and use our lungs for our job so by doing this and breathing off the tanks it makes it a little bit harder and for the 30-40 minutes that we were out here today [Sunday], that's what they're dealing with daily their whole lives," Farmer said.

With over 50 pounds of gear each, the firefighters finished in 39 minutes.  They raised at least $2,500 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
