Iowa farmer wants closed civil trial over killing

DES MOINES (AP)--A lawyer for a central Iowa farmer convicted of killing his neighbor wants to ban the public from a civil trial related to the killing.

Rodney Heemstra, of Milo, shot Tom Lyon in 2003.

Heemstra was originally convicted of first-degree murder. The Iowa Supreme Court ordered a new trial, and Heemstra was convicted of voluntary manslaughter.

Lyon's estate has accused Heemstra of conspiring to commit fraud to avoid a nearly $6 million wrongful death judgment.

Heemstra lawyer is requesting a closed trial. Christine Sand claims the case will involve confidential information, which could lead to damage to Heemstra's property rights

The attorney for Lyon's estate objects.

The trial is set for July 6 in Warren County District Court in Indianola.
