Solon man thankful large tree fell away from home

JOHNSON COUNTY (KWWL) - High winds brought down tree limbs all around Iowa City as thunderstorms rolled through Tuesday evening.

There were reports of power lines down on Jefferson Street and near the Iowa River by the intersection of Iowa Street and Riverside Drive.

And part of Ridge Road had to be blocked off after a tree limb fell into a power line.

About ten miles north of Iowa City, in Solon, a large tree came down across the road, hitting power lines along the way.

The owner of the home was driving back from Cedar Rapids when the storm hit.  Michael Molitor turned the corner and said, "That ain't good."

But he said he's at least thankful the tree didn't fall the other way.

"It could have hit the house instead of falling in the street which is a lot better for me," Molitor said.  "Nature happens."

Molitor said the spruce was more than 100 years old and had survived countless ice storms and thunderstorms.

Most of Solon lost power, but got it back shortly after the storm passed.
