M.S.R.A. from animals

Cases of antibiotic-resistant staph infections have been increasing in recent years, and some victims are getting it from an unexpected place: The family pet!

Writing in the current issue of "The Lancet Infectious Diseases," researchers say they're seeing more and more cases of dogs and cats with M.S.R.A., staph bacteria that's resistant to many antibiotics.

Experts say animals can pick it up from their owners, and then transmit it back to them through bites.

Doctors recommend treating even minor dog and cat bites immediately by washing the cuts and getting antibiotics if necessary.

Young children are often the victims of dog bites because of their small size.
