City's First "CR Open House" Today

Posted:

CEDAR RAPIDS (NEWS RELEASE) - June 22, 2009 - The City of Cedar Rapids invites all residents to the first of three "CR Open House" events Tuesday, June 23, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Ballroom, 350 First Avenue NE. This open house will provide information on the needs, the process and work to date.

The City is combining its facilities and parks and recreation public participation processes to make the open house events more convenient for residents to provide feedback, input and comments. All of the public feedback received will be used to guide the most efficient use of community facilities and parks and recreation facilities and programs to meet the needs of the community today and for the next generation.

During the event, participants will find a series of color-coded information stations in which to study and provide comments. In the green Parks and Recreation station, the information is divided into four sections:

Indoor Recreation
Parks & Open Space System
Riverfront
Trail System

In the blue Community Facilities station, the information is divided into two sections: existing buildings and concepts for combined buildings and services. The existing buildings included in this process are:

Animal Control
Central Fire Station
Former United States Courthouse
Intermodal Transportation Facility
Main Public Library
Public Works Building
Veterans Memorial Building

The concepts for combined buildings and services are:

Community Operations Center
Community Services Center
Community Safety Center
Intermodal Transit Facility
Neighborhood Centers
Westside Community Center

City Council members, City staff members and the Trustees of the Cedar Rapids Public Library will attend the event to answer questions and help citizens record their feedback and comments.

For residents who cannot attend this open house, a set of "CR Open House: Community Facilities + Parks & Recreation" web pages will launch on Wednesday, June 24. The pages will display all the information from the event and provide access to an online feedback form.

The second "CR Open House" on Tuesday, August 18 will provide information on facility and programming options, and the final "CR Open House" on Tuesday, October 6 will provide information on preferred options. Locations for these open houses will be announced at a later date. The "CR Open House" public participation process involves residents early and effectively in decisions impacting the community. Public feedback ensures that the final plan reflects the identified needs and interests of the entire Cedar Rapids community.
