EXTRA: Safety tips for working in heat

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- With hot weather in the forecast, people planning to work outside should be aware of the following safety tips from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health:

1. Have cool rest areas where you can get out of the sun and cool down.

2. Drink plenty of water.  A worker, therefore, should not depend on thirst to signal when and how much to drink. Instead, the worker should drink 5 to 7 ounces of fluids every 15 to 20 minutes to replenish the necessary fluids in the body.

3. Wear light weight clothing.

4. Do the most physically demanding tasks during the coolest times of day and avoid doing hard work at peak warm periods.

5. Avoid drinking alcohol because it dehydrates you.

6. Getting sufficient sleep and eating right can help build a resistance to heat.

Be sure to direct any specific questions about working in the heat to your physician.
