Kernels end first half with 6-4 loss

Posted:

June 21, 2009 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels dropped the final game in the first half of the MWL season to the Clinton LumberKings by the score of 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Angel Castillo went 3-4 with a double, HR and RBI and Tyson Auer was 2-5 with a double, RBI and stolen base.

Kernels starter Manuel Flores (3-3) allowed five runs on eight hits over 4.1 innings in taking the loss. Dwayne Bailey and Roberto Lopez each added an RBI and Matt Crawford was 1-5 with a double.

Clinton starter Bobby LaFromboise (5-2) allowed four runs on eight hits over 5 innings for the win and Ruben Flores retired the Kernels in the ninth for his 13th save. Denny Almonte was 2-5 with a HR and 4 RBI and Steve Moss was 4-4 with 2 RBI.

With a win, coupled with a Kane County loss to Wisconsin, the Kernels could have finished as the first half MWL Champions, but entered the game knowing they could finish no worse that the wild card. The top two teams in each division of the MWL qualify for the playoffs in September and will have home field advantage in the first round.

The Kernels take a break for the MWL All-Star Game, hosted by Clinton, on Tuesday, June 23rd as six Kernels, including starting second baseman Alexi Amarista, will represent the West All-Stars. First pitch from Alliant Energy Field is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

The Kernels begin second half play with an eight game road trip on Thursday, June 25th, with games at Burlington and Beloit. They return to Perfect Game Field on Saturday, July 4th and take on Quad Cities in a 5:05 pm game.
