Habitat for Humanity hosts Couples Build Day

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- The Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity held its first ever Couples Build Day.

Volunteers came with their significant other to build a house in less than a week.

"It's been exciting to see couples of all ages working together.  Some have construction experience and some don't so we are giving some couples strange and foreign tasks. [We're doing things] like putting on a roof and watching them communicate with each other and how to accomplish a task as a team," said AmeriCorp volunteer Christopher Swanson.

Among the couples were the future owners of the house, the Elgaali's from Sudan.

The Elgaali couple had a hard time finding an affordable house big enough for them and their 5 children.  They have been waiting for a house through Habitat for Humanity for the last 5 years.
