Storms bring hail, heavy rain, winds to Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Thunderstorms that swept across Iowa overnight with heavy rain, hail and strong winds have left behind widespread damage and power outages.

There was a report of a tornado near Nashua (NASH'-yoo-uh) in northeast Iowa, but no injuries were reported.

The National Weather Service says several storms hit late Wednesday and early Thursday. Golf-ball sized hail dropped in west central Iowa, while strong winds of 70 mph roared across central, eastern and southern Iowa.

In central Iowa, authorities say a semitrailer was blown off Interstate 35 in Story County, while a roof was ripped off a house and barn near Bondurant in Polk County.

There are scores of damaged trees and downed power lines.

Iowa's two largest utilities had a total of about 11,000 customers without power Thursday morning.
