Lakers cheered at parade, rally

LOS ANGELES (KWWL) - The NBA champion Lakers have been greeted with a huge roar at a celebration rally at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The Lakers made their way on double-decker buses through streets packed with fans dressed in purple and gold. The parade began at the Staples Center, the team's arena.

Veteran player Derek Fisher, whose pair of three-point shots had sealed victory over the Orlando Magic in Game Four, shouted his thanks to the fans for their support.

There had been concern about the estimated $2 million cost of the celebration, in a city that's heavily in debt and facing layoffs. But private donors stepped forward and picked up most of the cost.

There had also been concerns about a repeat of the violence that followed Sunday night's victory. Looting and vandalism following the game led to 18 arrests. Police say at least 1,700 officers have been keeping watch on the crowd.
