Tractorcade draws hundreds - KWWL - Eastern Iowa Breaking News, Weather, Closings

Tractorcade draws hundreds

DUBUQUE COUNTY (KWWL) - More than 500 tractors are joining in a joyride from Dubuque to Dyersville and back.

The 10th anniversary of the Great Eastern Iowa Tractorcade began Tuesday and will continue through Wednesday.

Hundreds of orange, blue, yellow, red and green tractors took on the 55 mile trip, cruising at 16 miles per hour. Organizers say "tractor people" are a different sort and love nothing more than hitting the road on their machines.

The Dubuque County Fairgrounds grounds will serve as registration headquarters as "home base" each day. This is the third year that the Tractorcade will use a clover-leaf-style route, leaving and returning to the same location on each day of the ride. The grounds will be open to the public on each evening and several of the communities along the route are planning special activities and events in conjunction with the ride.

The general public should be advised that there may be traffic backups related to the tractor traffic. The tractors are divided into seven groups of about 75 tractors each, with time "buffers" between each group so that motorists will not be overly inconvenienced. "We try to stay away from the major roadways," says ride coordinator Renee Uhtoff, "but we do encourage drivers to think about alternate routes on those specific times of the day when we'll be in their area. The first group of tractors generally leaves the grounds between 7:00 and 7:30am and it takes about 4 hours for the entire ride to pass through any given point, so plan accordingly."

The ride begins Monday, June 14th and will travel west on Old Hwy 20 from Dubuque for a pit stop in Epworth and then continue west on to Farley and then on to the lunch stop at the National Farm Toy Farm Museum in Dyersville. After lunch, the group will make their way north through New Vienna and into our afternoon pit stop in Bankston. From Bankston we will travel south back to the Fairgrounds.

Tuesday, June 15th, the tractors will head north a quick stop in Bankston and then on to lunch in Holy Cross. After lunch, the tractors will travel the scenic Ridge Road through Balltown and go into our Afternoon pit stop in Sherill. The final leg takes the group South back to The Dubuque County Fair Grounds. On Tuesday Evening there will be entertainment and a picnic for drivers and the community. Tractors will be parked for viewing at the fairgrounds.

Wednesday, the tractors will take a short tour South to Timberline Golf Course before returning to the fairgrounds for a final meal and closing ceremonies.

All of the communities along the route are very much looking forward to welcoming Tractorcade and showing off their unique and picturesque attractions. A number of live radio broadcasts will take place from the various stops throughout the ride.
