Super Shot Saturday provides over 300 immunizations

Dubuque, Iowa - June 16, 2009 - Dubuque Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) staff, Finley Hospital employees and members of Dubuque Rotary worked together on Saturday, June 13 to provide over 300 immunizations to 90 children at the 16th annual Super Shot Saturday at the Finley Hospital Auditorium.  There was no charge for immunizations.  This is the first year that Super Shot Saturday has occurred in June.  Usually an August event, the clinic date was moved to June hoping parents would still be in a "school" mindset and take the time to update their child to meet school vaccination requirements.    With 90 children participating, the VNA considered the clinic a success.

Sixty-two oral health screenings were administered to children (infant through age 18) and to children without a family dentist who are affected by the new Iowa School Dental Screening Mandate. Effective 7/1/08, this mandate requires a screening before elementary and high school entrance. There was no charge for the VNA oral health screening.  This is the third year that VNA oral health staff have provided screenings at Super Shot.  The Super Shot clinic is an idea time for children to receive this dental service in addition to updating their vaccination status.

Super Shot Saturday is a joint collaboration with the Dubuque Rotary Club.  Rotarians have a special interest in promoting childhood vaccinations and work worldwide on that goal.  The Rotary provided volunteers to help the clinic flow smoothly and to help VNA staff as they served the families attending.  VNA Junior Board members also volunteered to help VNA support staff with check-in registration.

In response to Saturday's successful event, the VNA has already scheduled the next Super Shot clinic for June 12, 2010 at Finley Hospital.
