Massive hail back in 1882

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- It was on June 16, 1882 that 17 inch hailstones weighing almost two pounds fell in Dubuque.  According to the Monthly Weather Review, for 13 minutes, starting at 2:45 in the afternoon, the largest and most destructive hailstones fell in Dubuque.

The largest recorded weighed one pound 12 ounces.  Washington Park was covered with hail the size of lemons.  One man even reported finding small living frogs frozen inside the hail.

There were numerous injuries, and an estimated $5,000 in damage, in 1882 money.  No hail fell on the eastern side of the river, or at Julien, six miles west of Dubuque.
