Tipton Announces New July 4 Parade Route

Summer construction means Tipton's popular annual 4th of July Parade will have to take a new route. The City and Tipton Chamber announced the new route and schedule of events in the following press release:

The City of Tipton and the Tipton Chamber of Commerce invites everyone to join us in celebrating the 4th of July in Tipton.  Family friendly activities in the park and all over town are planned throughout the day on Saturday, July 4th, including a parade at 2pm and fireworks at dusk.

The annual 4th of July parade's theme for 2009 is "Movies on Parade".  All parade floats and entrants are encouraged to creatively use this theme to decorate your float to your favorite movie. A parade contest and prizes will be awarded to those floats that best exemplify the theme.  Headlining the parade is our 2009 Grand Marshall, Dave Stephens. Dave has been a dynamic member of the community for many years, serving the Tipton community through various service activities, including TEDCO, Rotary and Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.  Be sure to stop by Family Foods before the parade for butterfly pork shop sandwiches by the Cedar Co. Pork Producers and the Tipton Chamber of Commerce.

The parade will begin at 2:00pm and will follow a new route this year due to construction on Cedar Street.  The parade staging area remains the same, but the parade will travel along Meridian St. instead and then continue onto North Ave.  Lineup begins at 1:15pm.  See the Tipton website www.tiptoniowa.org for a map and additional details for the line-up.

Beginning Saturday morning, pony rides, a petting zoo, food vendors and more will provide plenty for families to do in the park throughout the day.  B&B Farms returns with their pony rides and petting zoo for all to enjoy.  The Apostolic Church of Tipton will be running a jumpy castle, while the Tipton High School Cheerleaders will be providing fun games and activities, including a cakewalk, dino-dig, lollipop tree and face-painting.  The Lions Club will have funnel cakes and the Calvary Four-Square Church will be serving foot-long hot dogs, cotton candy and sno-cones.

The James Kennedy Family Aquatic Center will be offering a free "open swim" from 10:00am - 1:00pm on Saturday with a general swim from 3:30-6pm.  A 3 on 3 basketball tournament will be held at the basketball courts beginning at 9am in front of the high school, along with a slo-pitch softball tournament at the park.  Register for the 3 on 3 tournament at the aquatic center.  Sign up for the basketball tournament ends July 1.

Please contact event coordinator Mike Pelzer at 886-6191 or John Todd at the Chamber office at 886-6350 with any questions.
