June 15 - State bar exam history

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- It was on June 15,1869 that an Iowa woman became the first in the nation to pass a state bar exam, becoming eligible to practice law.

Mount Pleasant native Arabella Mansfield graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1866.  She taught at Simpson College for a year before returning home to study law.   She and her husband both passed the bar on the same day in 1869.

However, Mansfield did not become a lawyer.  The couple instead began teaching.  11 years later, she was inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame.  She also chaired the Iowa Woman's Suffrage Convention in 1870.
