Xavier wins 4th straight soccer title

MUSCATINE-Cedar Rapids Xavier extended its reign over Class 1A soccer for a fourth-consecutive year as the top-ranked Saints held off No. 3 Dallas Center-Grimes for the second-straight year with 1-0 victory in the 1A title match Saturday morning in Muscatine.

Cedar Rapids Xavier, winners of five of the last six 1A crowns, scored the only goal of the match when all-tournament captain Kathryn Mettenberg scored at the 53-minute mark of the match. The Saints also received some outstanding defensive play in keeping the Fillies from scoring for the first time against 1A competition this year.

Xavier's championship is the fifth in school history, tying them with West Des Moines Valley for the most in state history. The Saints end the year with an 18-4 record.

Dallas Center-Grimes, runners-up in Class 1A for the second-straight season, finishes with a 14-6 mark.
