Xavier knocks off Union

MUSCATINE-Three-time defending champion Cedar Rapids Xavier exploded for four goals in a 10-minute span to wipe out a 1-0 Union lead as the top-ranked Saints advanced to the Class 1A championship match for the sixth-straight year with a 4-2 victory over the fourth-ranked Knights.

Union freshman Darian Powell scored her 70th goal of the season on a Cathy Reither assist in the 12 minute mark of the first half to give the Knights a quick 1-0 lead that held until Xavier's second half outburst.

The top-ranked Saints tied the score on Colleen Bouchard's unassisted goal five minutes into the second half and took the lead five minutes later on Kathryn Mettendberg's goal. Annie Dale and Lauren Konchar added two more tallies to put the match out of reach. Reiter added Union's final score with 20 minutes left in the match.

Cedar Rapids Xavier will face third-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes in a rematch of last year's 1A title game at 11 a.m. Saturday. Union, making its first-ever State appearance, ends its season at 21-1.
