Iowa woman's photo sparks push for new cloud type

DES MOINES(AP) -- An Iowan's photograph is sparking a push for a new cloud type.

Jane Wiggins, of Cedar Rapids, took a photo of dark, undulating clouds in June 2006.

Weather watchers are now pushing for a new cloud category -- something that hasn't been done since 1951.

Gavin Pretor-Pinney and his England-based Cloud Appreciation Society have given Wiggins' photo and similar pictures to experts in England.

There are three main groups of clouds: cumulous, cirrus and stratus. Each has sub-classifications.

Brant Foote of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado says the clouds already fit into the existing cumulous classification.

But Pretor-Pinney believes the clouds merit their own classification. He proposes they be called altocumulus undulatus asperatus.
