WASHINGTON - Senator Chuck Grassley today announced that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $30,000 competitive grant to the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, in partnership with Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo and Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, through the U.S.-Brazil Higher Education Consortia Program.

"These funds will allow students and faculty in Iowa to expand their international education opportunities through a cooperative partnership with universities in Brazil as they continue their studies in business and agriculture," Grassley said.

The University of Northern Iowa, Hawkeye Community College and Kirkwood Community College will use the money to help fund a partnership with two Brazilian Universities. The partnership will focus on business and agriculture.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S.-Brazil Higher Education Consortia Program is a grant competition run cooperatively by the U.S. and Brazil governments to promote student-centered cooperation between the U.S. and Brazil to help increase cross-national education and training opportunities throughout many academic and professional disciplines.  A consortium must have at least two academic institutions from each country.  The University of Northern Iowa will participate as the U.S. lead academic institution with Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo and Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids participating as the U.S. partner academic institutions.  The Universidade Federal de Goias will participate as the Brazil lead academic institution with the Universidade de Brasilia as the Brazil partner academic institution.
