Iowa City joins growing urban chicken movement

IOWA CITY (AP) -- Why did the chicken cross the road?

Who knows. But if it was crossing an Iowa City road, it could be a violation of community ordinances -- at least for now.

People are circulating a petition that asks for a change in city code that would allow residents to keep up to five hens. Roosters would be banned.

Organizer Stacey Driscoll says that so far, 700 signatures have been collected. She says the petition will be put to the city council within the next few weeks.

The urban chicken movement has been growing over the past several years, with Dubuque, Chicago, Madison, Wis., and other cities proposing changes that would allow the animals in residential areas.

Proponents say chickens make good pets while also providing fresh eggs.
