Gay marriage could affect 2012 presidential race in Iowa, New Hampshire

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- Gay marriage in New Hampshire and Iowa could affect the landscape of presidential politics in 2012.

While some see opposition to gay marriage easing nationwide, that's not the case among Iowa Republicans -- especially among social and religious conservatives who oppose gay marriage.

Key strategists say to be competitive among Iowa Republicans, presidential candidates likely will have to toe the line.

That isn't the case in New Hampshire, where Republicans tend to be more fiscally conservative and socially moderate.

Gay marriage became legal in Iowa in April after a ruling by the Iowa Supreme Court. In New Hampshire, the Legislature approved a gay marriage bill on Wednesday, which takes effect in January.
