Iowa students sickened by rat poison

DAVENPORT (AP) -- Officials say a student at a Davenport elementary school brought rat poison to school and gave it to seven classmates.

District spokeswoman Laura Bozarth says the second and third graders at Monroe Elementary School ingested a small amount of the pellets before school Tuesday. She says all the students are OK.

Bozarth says one student told a school employee, who told administrators. The Iowa Statewide Poison Control Center was called, and Bozarth says officials were told the children would have to ingest a large quantity to become sick.

Bozarth says some parents took their children to the doctor.

Bozarth says it's unclear why the student brought the rat poison. She declined to give details about the student or comment on the student's status.
