Iowa City police search for Deli Mart robber

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -  Iowa City police are searching for who reportedly robbed the Deli Mart on Highway 1 earlier this morning.

The clerks says two males ran from the store with a drawer from the cash register.

According to police, the clerk found the two men crouching behind the counter after retrieving supplies from the back of the store.

The clerk says the suspects were both wearing hoodies with the hoods up and had bandanas covering their faces.

In the report, the suspects were in the process of removing a drawer from one of the cash registers. The suspects attempted to flee when discovered by the clerk. The clerk tried to stop the suspects. One fled with the register drawer while the clerk struggled with the second. The second suspect broke free of the clerk and fled from the store. The clerk gave chase and caught him again outside the store. The suspect struck the clerk, broke free, and again fled northbound. The clerk chased the suspect as he fled across Hwy 1 but reconsidered the pursuit and stopped to recover some of the money that the fleeing suspect had dropped. The clerk returned to the store to notify police.

While struggling with the clerk, the suspect was unmasked; his hood was pulled down and his bandana fell to the ground. It was the clerk's impression that the suspect was possibly a white male. In reviewing surveillance video, it appeared to investigating officers that the suspect was a black male. The suspects are described as follows:

1. A male of unknown race, possibly in his twenties, approximately 6'00" tall, and of medium build. He was wearing a black hoodie and a light-colored bandana. Fled store with register drawer.

2. An apparent Black male, possibly in his twenties, approximately 6'00" tall, and of medium build. He was wearing a blue hoodie, a blue and white bandana, a black or dark-colored shirt with a light-colored logo or design, and khaki-colored pants with a blue or black stripe along the outseam. Assaulted clerk before fleeing.

At least one of the suspects apparently discarded clothing while fleeing north along Miller Av. Officers recovered several items including a blue and white bandana with a motorcycle pattern, a black hoodie, and a blue shirt displaying a Disney picture.

No weapon was displayed and the clerk was uninjured in the robbery. Police are not releasing the amount taken. Police are asking for the public's help in positively identifying and locating the suspects.
