Dubuque Superintendent retirement celebration

Dubuque (News Release) -- The Dubuque Community School District will sponsor two events on Sunday, June 7, 2009 to honor and celebrate the work of retiring Dubuque Community School District Superintendent John Burgart.

Burgart has led the District through a period of increasing challenge for public schools, and has mentored thousands of young people over his 39-year career as an educator.

A Community Open House will take place from 3:30pm to 5:30 pm on Sunday, June 7 at the Grand River Center where Mr. Burgart will be available to greet the public. The event is free and open to all members of the Dubuque community.

Following the Community Open House on June 7, a dinner and reception will be held at the Grand River Center. A social hour will begin at 6:00pm with dinner served at 7:00pm. Community members and community partners in education are invited to attend. Reservations are required by May 29, 2009. Tickets are $40.00 per person or a table of 10 may be reserved for $350. Reservations may be made through the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque at 563.588.2700 or through the Community Foundation website, www.dbqfoundation.org .

To honor Superintendent Burgart and his legacy as an educational leader for our community, our schools and our children, the District in collaboration with the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque, has established the Burgart Endowed Fund for Educational Excellence.

This endowed fund will make annual distributions to projects focused on accelerating student achievement, and it will be presented to him at the June 7th Educational Excellence Dinner.

Persons interested in making a charitable gift to honor John are invited to contact the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque at 563-588-2700. Gifts may be eligible for Endow Iowa, a 20% state tax credit.
