Police say Good Samaritans blinded by scam

AMES (AP) -- Police in Ames say several people were taken in by a man who said he was a blind, injured veteran.

Police say the good-doers gave the man money to get a hotel room and other donations. They also helped him cash checks when he said he didn't have any identification.

Police say the problem is the man wasn't blind, injured or a veteran. And they say the checks weren't his.

Police say 21-year-old Ryan Steil of Dubuque was arrested and charged with three counts of felony forgery and one count each of fraudulent practices, fifth-degree theft and third-degree burglary.

The alleged scams began a couple of weeks ago. Steil was arrested on May 24. He is being held in the Story County jail under $10,600 bond.
